At the end of April, we held a parent-mentor meeting at the community center, where all our supported families were invited. The occasion was an excellent opportunity for our tenth graders to present their completed project, Maker’s Red Box: City of the Future, before the meeting began. The young participants worked excitedly even in the hours leading up to the presentation, putting the finishing touches and decorations on their scale models. When building a model city, one can never truly say “it is finished”; rather, “this is where we stopped,” as new ideas, small details, and alternative solutions constantly occur to the creators while observing the city.
Those who have followed the city’s development on our website may know that we recently elected its mayor as well. To start, Gábor Illés shared summary thoughts and explained the entire process, from brainstorming and design to execution. Following this, representatives of various municipal sectors presented their visions for what healthcare, public safety, transportation, industry, housing, sustainability, and entertainment might look like in a hundred years. The issue of energy supply was a particular success, addressed by Attila Miklós’s fusion power plant and his explanation of its operating principles. After the presentation, parents of the younger children were pleased to learn that this project awaits their children in the next school year as well.
Turning to other agenda items, we first discussed the schedule for the Portfolio Evaluation in mid-May. We are delighted that the Szentes evaluation committee will be honored not only by Board Members Gábor Marosi and Zoltán Szalai but also by Dr. Erika Csányi, the director of the Board. Parents will handle the logistics and catering for the day. Everyone is eagerly anticipating the event.
We also discussed our summer camps: the younger students are preparing for the Financial Literacy and Drama camp, alongside a local camp. Many of the older students are involved in multiple camps thanks to their scores in the Language Competition; several are heading to England, Germany, and Croatia. Similarly, the Sports, Arts and Crafts, and Nature Photography camps await students from Szentes. Our tenth-grade thematic camp will travel to Transylvania, where our goal is to explore as many historical, cultural, and natural treasures as possible during the week ahead.
At the conclusion of the meeting, many stayed behind to take a closer look at the City of the Future and received answers to numerous interested questions.
