On Saturday afternoon, September 26, Group 1 of the Csányi Foundation in Kaposvár held its traditional family day. Over the past few years, family day traditions have already been established, and we have a well-proven system that everyone is used to and loves. This time, as well, we prepared with a gathering combined with a barbecue and shared activities.
While the grill masters were busy around the fire, grilling cheese and sausages, the parents and children set the table and chatted. It was good to see that on this afternoon not only the younger generation, but also the parents, junior mentors, and family members could finally meet. Conversations developed that there isn’t always time for in everyday life, and many were able to talk at length with people they might have had fewer opportunities to converse with before.
That is precisely what made this afternoon so wonderful: there was no need to rush anywhere, there was no strict schedule, we were simply together. Parents talked with one another, often with the children joining in as well, while younger siblings played hide-and-seek and games. The great atmosphere was also demonstrated by how the afternoon flew by almost unnoticed, and no one wanted to go home.
The weather favored us as well; the temperature was pleasant, the sun was shining, so we were able to stay outside together for a long time. After cooking and chatting together, there was still time to watch the videos made during the summer. We recalled the experiences of the camp in England, watched the recordings made at the Performing Arts Camp, as well as the short film that summarized the summer camps. Both parents and children thoroughly enjoyed the videos. It was nice to reminisce a bit and return together to those days when we were still in England. In front of the screen, summer experiences surfaced once again, and one could often hear the children bringing up a memorable story or two.
We also held the parent-teacher meeting during the family day. We briefly summarized the most important events of the past year and talked about what awaits the young people in the coming period. Most of them started ninth grade in September, entering a completely new environment, a new school, and a new group of peers. Many new tasks and challenges lie ahead of them, which is why it is important that during this period they also feel the support of their families and the community.
The afternoon ultimately lasted until dusk. It was good to see so many familiar faces, hear the conversations and laughter, and see that the families truly enjoyed each other’s company. Perhaps the most important value of the day was that, for a few hours, everyone could set aside everyday routines and relax a little.
Those who were there didn’t just participate in a shared program, but were enriched by a community experience that will provide energy for a long time to come. That is why these gatherings are so important: because community is built not only from shared programs, but from conversations, laughter, time spent together, and the feeling that it is good to belong to one another.
