Project Closing Day at the Huber Arboretum

“Today (June 13), we once again had the pleasure of hosting the Pécs 3 and Pécs 1 groups of the Csányi Foundation at the Huber Arboretum. During the professional day a week ago, we discussed the morphological and anatomical characteristics of plant leaves and, through these, their adaptation to various climate challenges. To kick off the day, I illustrated this through the maple genus, demonstrating the incredible diversity in the leaf sizes of different species depending on their climate of origin and the amount of water available in their natural habitats. It was a great joy for us that the children once again participated in the programs actively, with curiosity and openness. Throughout the day, numerous nature-related games awaited them, including an exciting giant pinecone hunt, which brought many fun moments to the participants. The visit of our guest speaker from India was a special experience, who gave an interesting and educational presentation in English about water management in his home country. In addition, the young people gained insight into the world of Indian stick fighting, which they tried out with great enthusiasm. Respecting our Indian guest’s culture, our lunch was a delicious vegetarian Indian dish, which was enjoyed by everyone. We concluded the joint program with a presentation of the garden’s fruit-bearing species, which I usually refer to as the ‘winners of climate change’. In the future, fruit-bearing plants such as figs, pomegranates, pistachios, kiwis, Chinese dates, and cold-selected olive varieties clearly have a place in Hungarian agriculture. The positive feedback received from the children confirmed that they had a great time and gained valuable experiences. We trust that the successful cooperation between the Csányi Foundation and the Huber Arboretum will continue in the future, and that we can provide many more similar experiences for the young people.”
