Visiting the Underground Railway Museum

A few days ago was the 125th jubilee of the first tram given to public. We use the public transport day-by-day, so we thought it would be a great idea to visit the Underground Railway Museum on the 3rd December.

The museum commemorating the first underground railway of the continent was opened in 1975 and was renovated in the course of the entire underground line in 1996. Special feature of the museum is that the exhibition area itself is a technical monument: an original strech of the tunnel of the Millennium Underground Railway, which was abandoned when the line was rebuilt in 1955. Therefore, not only the cars, mockups, documents and photographs on display in the museum, but also the walls radiate a unique historical atmosphere in the very heart of the inner city of Budapest. The visitors are welcomed by the original inscription of the former terminus: „Gizella tér” in genuine Zsolnay ceramic tiles. The vehicles exhibited were set on the tracks by cranes through the opened roof in 1975. The display cabinets facing the cars present original documents, photographs, models and other exhibits to decipt the history of the underground railway from the time of its construction up to this day. The final section of the display allows us to inspect in the metro constructions of Budapest.

The exhibition was great, everybody liked it, we could get many pieces of information about the history of public transport of Budapest. We would like to know more, so we decided to travel to Szentendre in spring, where we will visit the Urban Public Transport Museum. We are looking forward to going there.
