“Katalin Karikó’s journey towards the Lasker award and beyond” exhibition in Pécs

The University of Szeged, the University of Pécs, the Csányi Foundation and the Deák Ferenc Elementary School of the University of Pécs organized a travelling exhibition on the life of Katalin Karikó. The Nagy Lajos Gymnasium of the Cistercian Order and the Leőwey Klára Gymnasium of Pécs were involved as partners in the opening of the exhibition.

The exhibition, on view from 4 December, is unique. Prior to this, part of the material on display was exhibited at Katalin Karikó’s alma mater in Szeged and at the Csányi Foundation’s 1st Life Path Festival. The exhibitors have brought to Pécs material that has never been published in Hungary before. In addition to the university documents of Katalin Karikó, the world-famous Hungarian biochemist who has now won the Nobel Prize, the exhibition curated by the University of Szeged will also show the beauty of her most interesting science-related awards, which will be on display in Pécs, in the lobby of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs, from 4 December to 19 January.

At the opening of the exhibition, Prof. Dr József Bódis, President of the Board of Trustees of the University of Pécs, Dr Miklós Nyitrai, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs, Dr Miklós Radoszáv, Director of Operations of the Csányi Foundation, Katalin Turi, Director General of the University of Pécs Primary School, Secondary School and Kindergarten, gave a speech. The exhibition was opened by Dr. Gyula Nagy, Director General of the Klebelsberg Library of the SZTE. Katalin Farkas, the librarian of the Klebelsberg Library, Old Books of the University of Szeged, guided the audience through the exhibition.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was enriched by high quality lectures.

The exhibition will be open until 19 January 2024, without prior announcement. On 10 December 2023, from 14.00, the professional afternoon of the exhibition “Katalin Karikó’s path to the Lasker Prize and beyond” will be held in honour of the Nobel Prize of Katalin Karikó, in the Lecture Hall of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs, Dr Romhányi György, where all interested are welcome.

We would like to thank Ilona Újszászi, curator of the exhibition, communication expert of the University of Szeged, for her intercession in bringing the exhibition to Pécs, and for presenting the exhibition material in an extraordinary class for the beneficiaries of the Csányi Foundation and the students of the Deák Ferenc Primary School of the Deák Ferenc Primary School of the University of Szeged.
