Hello, I am Susanne Liaw. I am currently residing and teaching in Hungary on a Fulbright grant.
Today, I had the pleasure of presenting to the youths at the Csanyi Foundation community house in Nagybajom. I spoke to the students about my hometown, Los Angeles. I talked about the cultural aspects, such as Los Angeles’ celebrity and car culture, but I also told them about my work as an urban educator working with underprivileged youth.
The students I spoke to ranged from ages 13 to 18, and it was great to see kids of different ages cooperating. The students practiced their English and participated in a vocabulary activity where they matched key words from the presentation, such as “class polarization” and “segregation,” to pictures that illustrated the concepts. Many of the students have been with the Foundation since they were young, and I am honored to have worked with such motivated, optimistic young people.
