My name is Roland Szabó, and I was born in 1979. I went to elementary school in Nagybajom, and to secondary school in Kaposvár. After that I went to university in Budapest, where I graduated from the painting and visual education programme of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. I worked as a graphic artist in Budapest, then after 11 years I had the opportunity to move back to my hometown. I’m married, and my wife is an English teacher. Our son, Előd, is at the local kindergarten.
I’m a member of the Reformed Church, and I think the church plays a fundamental role in the education of children.
When I started university, some friends and I founded the Nagybajom Youth Circle, which has been active ever since and has evolved into the Alternaiv Cultural Association. I’ve had the opportunity to take part in the organisation of several community programmes, such as the “Sleep Another Day” 24-hour contest for secondary school students.
Between 2003 and 2007 the László Tibol art camp was organised in Nagybajom, where I taught painting and free-hand drawing to talented secondary school students.
Working with young people is very important, as the energy you invest in this serves a long term plan. For me it is also essential that the everyday life of children should be full of quality experiences, as these are stored away and later recalled as ideas or lovely memories.
I believe that in education you should have an honest and open attitude. If you have the ability, talent and opportunity to make life better for the next generation, you should work on it. This is why it is a great pleasure for me that I could join the Nagybajom group as a mentor. I will do my best to rise to this exciting challenge.
