In pairs in the polis
On January 20, 2024, the lion’s share of the Szeged Group 3 continued their studies on the ancient Greek world. During this occasion, the focus was on the polis, which refers to Greek city-states. The session was once again led by Marcell Sebők and Gábor Berta, who revolutionized history education. Following an introductory lecture on the topic, the participants formed pairs, and the competition of the polis began. Teams had to make various decisions during a chain of events on a timeline, significantly influencing the circumstances and future of the polis based on different criteria. These criteria included the cultural values, army, economy, agriculture, well-being of the population, and trade position of the polis. However, teams not only had to maximize their performance in managing their own city but also had to be competent on the international stage. This was because certain events affected multiple polises simultaneously, such as a war breaking out among them, the Greco-Persian Wars, or a postponed Olympic Games. After the group members became acquainted with the ebbs and flows of ancient political life, took care of their well-being, and clarified important matters affecting them, such as their semester grades, this year’s selection process in Szeged, and the upcoming portfolio defense in the next year, they expressed their gratitude to everyone who made it possible for them to spend a day filled with experiences together, while also enriching their knowledge and thinking.
