We visited a little family ranch
“On Friday afternoon, after school, some of us visited a village near Nagybajom, Somogysárd. The purpose of our visit was to see a small family “farm” and to learn about how this small family – specifically the Tóth family – farms their home. We already know Kristóf well, as he is a member of Group 3 of the Nagybajom Community Centre. He has told us a lot about the recently born little goat kids and we thought we would like to see them in person. Stopping in front of their house, we could already see the little kids running up and down the neighbour’s plot. We counted 5 kids, as about two months ago we had triplets and a month and a half ago we had twin kids. There were black, white, spotted, spotted, spotted. We also heard some of their names, Tom, Jerry and Snowflake. They were so handy, they allowed us to pick them up and hold them in our laps.
Kristóf’s parents told us about the beginning, when and why they decided to keep goats. They told us what they feed them, where they keep them at night, where they collect their hay and how many litres of milk Snowflake gives. Christopher also showed us how to milk a goat. He extracted nearly a litre of milk from the udder. His parents also make cheese from the milk, which we were able to taste. While István, Kristóf’s dad, told us about the cheese making process, Melinda, Kristóf’s mum, also treated us to onion scones.
After our snack, we headed to the pigeon house, where we saw two species of pigeons that were special to us. One of them is called the Buchara drummer and the other is called the Golden Red. They have very beautiful plumage and looks. Those of us who were brave enough could touch them. We were also able to pet a horse on the property and see scraping Wyandotte hens. Before our visit was over, we were able to swing under a 16-year-old weeping willow tree, chatting while we were treated to hornbills “walking” above us. The Tóth family were very kind to us, very hospitable, and we enjoyed our time with them. It was very nice to see Kristóf moving among the animals and loving and caring for them. We thank them for all the information they gave us about the animals “living” with them.” Csilla Bozsoki, Zsombor Kislaki, Vanessza Kovács – Nagybajom 2
