# I Won the Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship!

Over the weekend, a ceremony was held at the Chinese Embassy in Budapest to honor the winners of the Ambassadorial Language Competition. The Pécs Community House Group 2 is particularly proud of Dóra Boróka Facskó, who was among the ambassadorial grand prize winners this year. We are delighted to share Dorka’s personal account of this special day:

“I had been impatiently waiting for Saturday for days to finally attend the ceremony at the Chinese Embassy, organized in honor of the winners of the ambassadorial language competition.

My day started early, as I set off for the Chinese Embassy in Budapest at dawn on the bus with the directors, teachers, and awardees of the Confucius Institute in Pécs.

The building was magnificent, but unfortunately, we could only see it from the outside because the ceremony took place in the garden. Winners, their teachers, and parents from Hungary’s six Confucius Institutes and the Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual High School were present, alongside representatives of Chinese companies and other VIPs as guests of honor. As far as I could see, I was one of the youngest among the grand prize winners; those younger than me received smartwatches and tangible prizes, while the grand prize was won only by high school and university students besides myself.

In the application, we had to present why we are learning the Chinese language, our language exam results so far, performances, and plans. I am very fortunate that I could choose Chinese at my school through an outreach location of the Confucius Institute. Since I am excited by languages and enjoy language learning, I took the plunge three years ago, and I am becoming increasingly interested not only in the language but in Chinese culture as well.

The event was interesting, though it turned out to be a bit long, lasting for three hours. At the beginning, we listened to the Ambassador’s speech, followed by remarks from the President of the Hungarian-Chinese Friendship Association, and then the Principal of the Bilingual High School. Next came the presentation of certificates, and the program concluded with a cultural performance (dancing, singing, and Chinese instrumental music). It was great to participate in the event, listen to the speeches in Chinese (most of which I even understood), and get to know Chinese culture a little better.

By the end of the program, I think everyone could hardly wait to finally taste the traditional Chinese dishes set out for the garden reception. When mealtime arrived, the atmosphere enlivened, and everyone curiously tried the different courses.

Overall, the award ceremony was a special experience, although I got quite tired due to the long program. But I hope to stand here again as an awardee soon.”
