Fulbright in Pécs
Hi, I am Robin Cathey and I am currently living and teaching in Pécs, Hungary on a Fulbright grant.
I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to meet and work with the students at the Csanyi Foundation Community House in Pécs. I talked to students about my home state of Georgia. We discussed not only traditional food and music, but also past and current social issues of discrimination and racial prejudice. The students ranged from 13 to 19 years old and I was very impressed with both their command of English and their insights into their own cultures. They compared the issues I described in the US with issues in their own communities and country quite competently. We acknowledged problems that minority groups face socially, culturally and linguistically. Students participated in a final project in which they worked in groups to develop an outline for a similar presentation. What kinds of topics would they address if they were asked to present on their own country? Their contributions ranged from the recent immigration crisis to traditional customs and food. The students at the Csanyi Foundation were a pleasure to meet and work with. The students are bright and engaging and I am honored to have had the opportunity to collaborate with such optimistic and gifted individuals.

How we saw it…
Today was really busy for us. In the morning, we wrote the language tests then listened to two presentations given by Fulbright scholars. We learned much about them and their life. Robin Cathey from Georgia and Donna Roberts from Wales. Robin told us much about her life and upbringing and the social problems her home state faces. The lecture was really interactive and much fun. We hope to have the opportunity to meet them again in the future.
