FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND CREATIVE CAMP, TRANSYLVANIA

On 22.07.2024, the Foreign Language and Creative Camp started in Csíksomlyó with the children from Transylvania, who are the beneficiaries of the Directorate General for Social Care and Child Protection of Harghita and Covasna County. The camp is organised with mentors, staff of the Foundation, volunteers and mentor-assistants. The camp leader, officially opened the camp and presented the weekly programme. On the first day of the camp, the children arrived, and then the day continued with a drama game to get to know each other. After lunch, the children’s English level was assessed and they were placed in the appropriate English groups to improve their language skills. After class, we walked up to the Hármashalom-altar where we sang the Szekler hymn together, had a little peacefull time, and then it was time for a free programme where the children could occupy themselves with different activities: art, sports, singing and music.

For me, the Foreign Language Camp is an event to look forward to every year. This year it was the camp I told you to come to. I think all the participants have a great time, make new friends and have new experiences. This year was no different, which I was able to experience on others and myself, and there was no shortage of experiences. We always start the camp with some games to get to know each other, and then we are divided into different English groups with level tests. Other days are dedicated to language classes, recreational activities and every year we make sure to dedicate one day to an excursion. This year, we went to the petting zoo in Zetelak, where we met and fed lots of animals, and then we went on a hike to Madarasi-Hargita. Some of us got tired on the way, but it was worth it for the view. In my opinion, this camp was a meaningful, developmental and an experience-rich opportunity for all. Both the Csányi Foundation and the staff of the Multi-house are a team that will help you with any problem and try to solve everything. Thank you very much to them for having me here again this year!

This summer, I had a fantastic opportunity to travel to Csíksomlyó with two of my group mates, Peter and Milan, where we did junior mentoring at the local Foreign Language and Creative Arts Camp. The trip went smoothly, as we had done this trip several times before. We were a little nervous on the first day of the camp, but the campers quickly eased our nerves. The participants were extremely enthusiastic and everyone dived straight into practising English. We helped the children with the exercises and we learned a lot from them, especially about Transylvanian culture and customs. Our main task was to maintain order in the evenings. Fortunately, the good behaviour of the children made this easier for us.

One of the highlights of our great week was undoubtedly the excursion to Madarasi-Hargita. Already in the morning we were excitedly getting ready and as we set off towards the mountain with mountain rescue guide Ferenc Ilyés, to whom we thank for his work. We were soon captivated by the beauty of the landscape, with lush green forests everywhere, blueberry bushes in full bloom, fresh air and the peak of the Kopya posts in the distance beckoning us. On Friday, the Transylvanian children competed in a number of categories in the “Who’s Who” competition, which decided who would make it into this year’s All-Art Camp. The performances were rounded off by a team of mentors, tutors and volunteers who closed the evening with a hilarious language exam parody. On Saturday, all that was left was to say goodbye, officially ending the week of camp.

As we were in a language camp, the campers had English lessons during the day. On the first day, they were put into different English groups according to their level. The teachers were university students from the Foundation, who have a proffessional level English exam, and volunteer Amber Woolam helped. At the end of the week, each group presented a project that the children had created. The evening ended with a campfire, singing together and finally everyone dancing together under the stars. This camp gave us not only English language practice, but also lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. We can’t wait to return again next year!
