Buday project 2024
In 2023, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dr. László Buday, the Csányi Foundation, together with the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), the Hungarian Statistical Society (MST) and the Hungarian Association for the Study of Local History (HSZ), announced a competition for studies, organised a conference and established the Buday Memorial Medal in the birthplace of the renowned statistician, the Pécs Community House.
Following the success of last year’s conference, the Foundation, together with the above-mentioned organisations, organised the Buday Memorial Conference again, launched a short story competition on the theme of World War I (to mark the 110th anniversary of the outbreak of the war) and a statistical studies competition for students in higher education. The event will take place at the KSH Palace in Budapest on 25.10.2024.
Of course, the Pécs groups are also preparing a special project for the event this year, which they will present to the audience at the venue. The Pécs 1 group did research on two topics: measuring school bullying and compiling statistics on the shops of Király Street in Pécs. The Pécs 3 group researched World War I and carried out statistical analyses in group work on several topics: they analysed images in the Fortepan system, analysed AI – artificial intelligence databases, and looked at birth and death statistics from KSH sources.
The work was supported by junior mentors and the children practised their presentations.
