The word of cells
During our last two natural science lessons (25th April, 2nd May) we explored the world of cells and tissues.
As usual, we started the lesson in the garden of the Community House where we identified different plant and animal species and collected the necessary samples for the lessons. Then we learned about the parts of the microscope and dug deeper into the secrets of slides making. In the first round we cut fine pieces off from the stem, leaves and roots of different plants by razor blades. The pieces were dyed in order to see the most interesting parts under the microscopes before we put them between the glass slides. During the observation we could see the different and various cell parts of the plants.
We also examined a bit closer the samples taken from our garden pond and those ones that we got from the botanical garden. They contained different algae and crab species like daphnia (Daphnia sp.) and cyclops (Cyclops sp.). During both lessons there were some talented students who could separate daphnia from other species using pipette for our next windows farm, thus we could started our experiment with 20 representatives of Daphnia species.
On our May lesson the elderberry bushes in the back of the garden triggered our attention and we made elderberry syrup from sugar and lemon for the surprise of the Csányi students.
