The Wooded Pasture of Somogyfajsz

The Wooded Pasture of Somogyfajsz

On March 21, 2024, we set out towards the headquarters of the Somogy Nature Conservation Organization, where Tibor Tömösváry awaited us. On Thursday afternoon, we met at the Kund Castle and then headed to the famous wooded pasture of Somogyfajsz. Before we could immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature, we were provided with some guidance. Tibor explained the intricate relationships within the ecosystem and emphasized the importance of preserving our natural environment.

Our next stop was a grassy area filled with black hellebores. This protected plant had a significant impact on us, especially its variations and mutations, which flaunted pale yellow colors. We also received a little training in plant photography, which we appreciate greatly!

We continued our journey by off-road vehicle, as the puddles, potholes, and water flows prevented our minibus from progressing. The landscape became wild and rugged. Flooded meadows, reed beds, and “dry-legged” alder trees in the lakes signaled that we were in habitats that may have characterized the entire inner Somogy region long ago. Beside us, gray cattle herded their calves, which again was an unusual sight for today’s children.

While two of our youngsters were busy with wildlife photography, the rest of us embarked on an impromptu adventure tour provided by our host. Gray herons, great egrets, mute swans, and the highly protected glossy ibises were waiting to be captured by our lenses. We had an extremely eventful, entertaining, and informative afternoon, gaining insight into such places and admiring such rare species that it’s hard to put the experiences into words. It’s a great help and a good feeling when young people have such opportunities for shaping their perspectives and when they warmly welcome our group! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the time spent together, and we are already looking forward to the next adventure! Thank you very much!
