For our environment – tree planting in Szentes
“As part of our Health and Environment project, we completed an important task this week: we planted trees in the public space in front of our community house on Munkácsy Street.
Of course, the action would have been most topical on Birds and Trees Day, but based on the experience of recent years with climate change, planting saplings in May would hardly have had a good outcome. However, the World Forest Day and World Water Day on 21 and 22 March also provided an excellent opportunity for the event and for a useful discussion on why trees are important to us, the role of forests in the Earth’s oxygen supply and biodiversity, and a comparison of how these plants modify the microclimate of an urban environment. After the thought-provoking theory, we grabbed shovels, hoes and rakes and put our trees in the ground. The work ended with a thorough watering. The seedlings planted are a variety of a species native to the Great Plain: the most important characteristic of our golden ash trees is that they will delight the passers-by with their colourful foliage in autumn. We would like to thank the Municipality of Szentes and the City Supply NKFT for the seedlings and the help in the preparations, and Zoltán Héri for his work in digging up the hard, hard soil! We promise to regularly water, protect and take care of our trees, not only for our own pleasure, but for the pleasure of all the people of Szentes” – Sándor Kovács Szentes 1. and Márta Őzéné Törőcsik Szentes 2., mentors
