WE WERE IN A LANDFILL
On the last day before the autumn break, we visited a part of the Jászság Group 4 at the site of REGIO-KOM Térségi Kommunális Szolgáltató Nonprofit Kft., Located next to Jásztelek. We have often been preoccupied with the idea that when we put plastic, metal, paper waste in the yellow – selective waste collection bags, we will know where it will go and what our future will be. Zoltán Horváth, an employee of the landfill, answers these questions.
The organization of the collection, removal and disposal of mixed municipal waste generated by the residents living in the settlements once a week is a municipal task, which must be used by the user of the property in accordance with the Waste Management Act. To fulfill this task, 33 settlements (Jászság and South Heves) established the Regio-Kom Regional Communal Service Association in 2000. From a tender source and the associated self-sufficiency, a landfill was built on the border of Jásztelek and Jászapáti and joint steps were taken to collect selective waste. The company’s tasks also include the operation of waste yards, the operation of selective islands, and the selective collection of waste from the house, as well as the management of the selective waste entering in this way.
We learned a lot of interesting things during the afternoon, such as the fact that the waste from the yellow bags is put into a huge rotating cylinder with holes 8cm in diameter to filter out the little things. The larger pieces are then placed on a conveyor belt, from where the workers working there sort the waste waiting to be recycled by hand. Unfortunately, a lot of other rubbish is included, which gives the workers extra work. Therefore, care must be taken to ensure that only what is written on it really goes into these bags. The sorted waste is then baled. We have seen huge cube bales of the same size but different weights: bales of aluminum cans: 150 kg, bales of PET bottles: 250 kg, bales of waste paper: 450 kg.
We also looked at the composting of green waste and went up the municipal waste hill, which was so high that we supplied it all the way to the Mátra. The site is located on an area of 7.5 hectares, which is constantly being expanded and waste is being compacted. From now on, we will be even more conscious in sorting garbage in households and selecting recyclable waste. ”
