In the birth town of King Mathias
We visited the St. Michael church in Kolozsvár, the Mathias statue in front of it, which regained its old splendour after many years.
Our tour guide Mr Attila told us about the story of the birth of the statue. We learned that it was an award winning sculpture at the world trade faire in Paris in 1896. Originally, the map of Hungary was seen on the foundation of the statue, but today we can see the ‘Mathias Rex’ sign. We also learnt about the history of St. Michael church and about its political role. We visited the house where Mathias was born, its curiosity is that it is a plain, normal house. The great king was born in the house of a winegrower.
Our mentors drew our attention to the most famous university of the area, the University of Babes-Bólyai.
We spent the afternoon in the cemetery of Házsongrád where we saw many old graves. The rest of the afternoon was travelling 250 km to Szentegyháza.
