Working as a volunteer at Csányi summer camp
I am very fortunate as I could spend a wonderful week in Tokaj with Csányi Foundation.
Half year ago I decided to teach English as a volunteer at a summer camp organised by the Foundation. One advantage of the mixed groups containing students from three different Community Houses (Nagybajom, Szeged, Pécs) was that the children had an excellent opportunity to socialise with others. As for the English lessons the students were really keen on discussing interesting topics related to their studies. I think that the communication based tasks made a tremendous impact on the language acquisition. The campers really enjoyed building sentences while elaborating on their personal opinion in front of the whole class. Moreover, language games like bingo also became very popular among the kids. In spite of the short period of the lessons (classes were on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) they improved a lot in their grammar and vocabulary skills. What I liked the best was the joy and happiness of the children and friendly atmosphere of the English lessons. I was glad to see that even after the lessons some students felt like practicing the language. Outside the classroom e.g. at mealtime or during the free time activities I could hear them talking in English, translating posters and singing songs. I am sure that our students can return home after an experience they will never forget.
